Site Investigation and Remediation
In 2004 an accidental release of diesel fuel from an aboveground storage tank was discovered at a hotel and restaurant complex. Whatcom Environmental was contracted to conduct an independent remedial action at the site.
The remedial action involved removal of approximately 90 cubic yards of petroleum contaminated soil (PCS) from the site and the collection of clean confirmation soil samples from the excavation to document the completeness of the remedial action. During the excavation, an abandoned heating oil underground storage tank was encountered. The tank was removed since fresh diesel was observed around the base of the tank.
PCS from the site was placed in a temporary bioremediation cell. Laboratory results showed that the soil had been successfully treated in the cell after approximately three months and no longer contained concentrations of contaminants above MTCA Method A target cleanup levels.
The site received a “No Further Action” letter from the Department of Ecology.
