Landfill Release Investigation
Whatcom Environmental evaluated a 3.25 acre landfill for evidence of leachate release to shallow groundwater. Six temporary one inch diameter piezometers were installed around the perimeter of the landfill using direct-push technology. The piezometers have been sampled twice to account for seasonal variations in leachate production. Groundwater analytical results indicate that there is no release from the landfill.
Whatcom Environmental initiated closure of the landfill under the existing fill and grade permit. The closure involved the construction of a clay cap on the landfill which was performed in difficult weather conditions. Following the clay cap, a soil layer was constructed on the landill to provide a vegetative cover. The site is closed and Whatcom Environmental is directing the post-closure care for the site.
