Holly Street Landfill

Project Location:
Bellingham, Washington
Project Situation:

A project to restore the Whatcom Creek estuary in Bellingham to its natural condition was undertaken in 2004. A portion of the estuary had been used as a solid waste landfill at the beginning of the 20th century but had since been paved over. Because the estuary serves as a salmon migration route, it is considered a sensitive environmental location.

Whatcom Environmental served as the environmental consultant to a large local construction firm in charge of the restoration.

Project Outcome:

Whatcom Environmental's duties included:

  • Development of the site Construction Work Plan
  • Development of the site Quality Control Plan
  • Monitoring of in-water work for excessive turbidity
  • Monitoring of stream water quality parameters
  • Testing of site soils for contamination
  • Testing of imported fill materials

Restoration of the Whatcom Creek estuary was successful, and the site continues to be used by migrating salmon. The area is now also the site of a public park.
